Edinburgh Hill Walk Escape

Wild Hills & Windy Trails

Hikers walking along a scenic mountain trail through rolling brown hills on an overcast day.

WALK. BREATHE. CAPTURE.

WHERE EDINBURGH ENDS AND THE HILLS BEGIN

There is something unforgettable about hiking through Scotland’s hills — the wide-open skies, the wind in your hair, the views that stop you in your tracks. Just outside Edinburgh, the Pentland Hills offer a completely different side of Scotland: wild, peaceful, and full of hidden charm.

THIS IS NOT A CITY TOUR. THIS IS A REAL SCOTTISH ADVENTURE.

You will walk, you will feel the wind on your face, you will get a little tired — but you will also breathe deeper, laugh more, and take home something special.

We will start at the base of Caerketton Hill and follow a scenic, quiet route that climbs gently at first, then leads us higher into the hills. On a clear day, the views stretch across the city, the Firth of Forth, and the surrounding peaks. We might spot Highland cows, ponies, or even a rainbow.

Along the way, I will document your journey through natural, heartfelt photographs — no awkward poses, just real moments in a truly beautiful place.

This private walking tour is perfect for visitors who want something more meaningful than a busy group tour — couples, families with older children, solo travellers. It is an ideal way to experience nature without leaving the comfort of Edinburgh too far behind.

YOU DESERVE A SCOTTISH ADVENTURE THAT YOU WILL NEVER FORGET.

What you'll do

Hill walk with big views, quiet trails, and a taste of real Scotland

Join me for a real Scottish adventure just on the edge of Edinburgh.

We will meet at the foot of Caerketton Hill, right beside the Midlothian Snowsports Centre — an easy drive or taxi ride from the city centre. From there, we will begin our gentle walk uphill, slowly turning more adventurous as we follow the path up the hill. This is a moderate hike — perfect for families with older children who enjoy the outdoors. The route is not suitable for pushchairs, but children who are used to walking will love the views and the sense of exploration.

Dogs are welcome too, as long as they stay on the lead — we often pass sheep, ponies, and other wildlife along the way.

We will walk at a relaxed pace, stopping often to enjoy the scenery and catch our breath. The views from the top are some of my favourites in all of Scotland — looking out over the Pentland Hills, across the Firth of Forth, and all the way to the iconic bridges and the edge of Edinburgh. On some days, we may even spot Highland cows grazing peacefully nearby, adding a little extra magic to the journey.

This is not a race — it is a peaceful, meaningful way to connect with the landscape, enjoy time as a family, and take in the beauty of Scotland off the beaten path.

Be prepared for some uphill walking, but do not worry — I will guide you gently and give you time to rest, breathe, and simply enjoy.

Slow Down. Look Around. Feel Scotland.

A shaggy black Highland cow with long horns grazes on a grassy hillside against an overcast sky.

SCOTTISH WEATHER: Part of the adventure

If the weather is a little wild (as it sometimes is in Scotland), we will not cancel unless it is unsafe. On days with strong winds, we may adjust the route slightly and explore the lower part of the Pentlands instead, including the charming Swanston Village, the nearby golf course, Highland ponies, and more sheltered viewpoints. The experience will always go ahead, adapted to the day’s conditions.

Scottish weather is unpredictable, but that is part of the adventure. As long as you bring the right layers and an open heart, you will have a beautiful experience to remember.

FRIENDLY NOTE:

This adventure is best suited for children aged 12 and over due to the hill’s steep and rocky terrain. It is a more challenging walk and may not be suitable for younger children.

That said, every family is different — if you feel your child is up for it, feel free to message me. I am always happy to chat and see what might work best for you.

To keep things relaxed and enjoyable, we can add extra time if needed for a slower pace. Additional time can be added at £100 per hour.

FAQ

How long is the experience?

The walk is around 4 kilometres in total, with time to pause and enjoy the views. We usually spend around 2 hours together, depending on the pace.

Do we definitely see Highland cows?

They live in the Pentlands and are often visible, especially in certain areas. However, they are wild animals, and I cannot guarantee their location on the day. We always keep a respectful distance and never approach them too closely.

What should I wear?

Good walking shoes or boots with grip are essential due to the uneven and sometimes slippery paths. Please also bring a waterproof jacket, warm layers, and clothing suited to the season and weather. It often gets very windy at the top.

Is it difficult?

The hill is a bit steep and can feel challenging in parts, especially near the top — but we take it slow and stop to rest and enjoy the views. You do not need to be super fit, but a moderate level of fitness is helpful.

Is it suitable for children?

This adventure is best for children aged 12 and over, due to the hill’s incline and uneven paths. However, every child is different — if you feel your child is fit and enjoys walking, feel free to get in touch. We can always add extra time (£100 per hour) to take things at a slower pace.

Younger children are welcome, but please note that we may need to slow the pace and add extra time to keep the walk enjoyable and relaxed for them. In this case, an additional fee of £100 per extra hour may apply to allow enough time for breaks, photos, and rest.

Please message me in advance if you plan to bring small children, so I can help you decide what works best for your family.

Can I bring my dog?

Yes! I love meeting four-legged friends. Please make sure your dog is on a lead, especially near wildlife and ponies.

What if the weather is bad? Will the session be cancelled?

There is no such thing as bad weather in Scotland — just the wrong clothes! We will go ahead in most conditions, including light rain, overcast skies, or chilly days. These are all part of the Scottish experience.

If the wind is dangerously strong, we will simply explore the lower part of the hills instead. Your safety and enjoyment always come first.

Is the route very busy?

No — that is part of the magic. This walk avoids the crowded tourist spots and takes you through peaceful, lesser-known areas of the Pentlands. It is a true local escape.

Can I combine this with a city photoshoot?

Absolutely yes — I love this!
If you would like to explore both the quiet hills and the charm of Edinburgh’s Old Town, I can create a custom package for you with a special multi-session discount.

We can plan it all in one day or split it across two days for a more relaxed experience.
It is completely up to you. Just let me know what feels right for you when you book.

How do I get there?

I will send you the exact postcode and directions to our meeting point at the Midlothian Sports Centre. Parking is available.

How do I book a session with Dorota?

Simply send me a message with your preferred date, number of people, and any notes about your group.
To secure your booking, I kindly ask for a £100 deposit, which will be deducted from your final total. Once the deposit is paid, I will confirm your session and send a short guide to help you prepare.

CAN’T DECIDE BETWEEN THE CITY’S CHARM AND THE HILLS’ CALM?

City

Explore the heart of Edinburgh. Let us walk through the quiet streets and beautiful corners of the Old Town, and capture natural, relaxed moments along the way.

Nature

Step into the hills. Slow down, take in the views, and enjoy a peaceful adventure just outside the city — surrounded by nature and fresh Scottish air.

Can’t decide? Many families and couples choose both — the city and the hills — to tell the full story of their time in Scotland.

If you are thinking about booking two experiences, just message me for a custom price — I offer a special multi-session discount for those who want to explore both sides of Scotland with me.

Planning a Trip to Scotland?

If you are visiting Edinburgh and looking for something a little more special — something peaceful, personal, and truly Scottish — this Edinburgh Hill Walk Escape in the Pentland Hills is the perfect way to slow down and breathe.

I work with many families from all over the world who want to experience more than just the usual city tours. This is not a busy tourist attraction. It is calm, open, and real. You will walk gentle trails, see beautiful views, and meet Highland cows in their quiet countryside home — just minutes from the city.
