5 tips for your family photography with twins
Family photography is about capturing each person's individuality and the special connection within the family unit. When planning a photoshoot with twins, the aim is to capture the strong bond between them and their unique individual relationship with their parents.
Time flies inexorably fast. And this is best seen in children who grow every day. We document their development almost every day with our smartphones. We take countless photos or videos for them, and we often never return to them; often, they are not even copied to the disk and get lost somewhere with the rest of the countless files.
Most importantly, there is never a complete family in these photos. Sometimes the phone is kept by mom and sometimes by dad. I know what I am saying because I am a mum of two girls and do what you do. I photograph my wonderful family forgetting to be part of the photo. That is why even a family photographer does professional family sessions because this is the only way to create true family portraits.
HOW TO PREPARE FOR YOUR LIFESTYLE FAMILY SESSION WITH TWINS
Be organised.
Whether you are photographing your newborn twins' toddlers or twin teenagers, prepare your plan in advance.
To get the most out of your session, ensure that your child/ children are rested and have adequate snacks and water. We can take breaks for snacks and play; however, I will probably still shoot during the breaks. Bring dry, non-messy snacks so their little faces stay clean during the session.
Stay True to You
It may be tempting to dress your girl/boy twins in bright pink and blue, but keep it classic. Neutral and true to you is always my recommendation. It's my recommendation for single babies as well, but it especially applies here. Many of my families have pink or blue for their fraternal twins and think they need to go that way. Don't feel pressure to have matching stuffed animals or gendered outfits because you've seen it done before if that doesn't fit your style.
Take the kids' clothes to disguise. Just in case
An outdoor family session may bring various surprises and it is worth taking a change of clothes with you. Leave them in the car. If it is needed, we will come back for it. It is better to have them with you than not 😉
Be prepared so that not everything can go according to plan.
Get ready for lots of hugs, play and laugh time. You know best how to cheer your child up. Think about what games your child likes the most, but when he/she needs a break to cuddle, it is excellent too; those are the beautiful moments you want to remember forever.
If your children are small, prepare a bag with toys and gadgets before the session.
It will help us in crisis moments and make it easier to convince the youngest to the next stage of the photo session. It can be a favourite car, a doll, a ball, blocks, or a book the child likes to read.
Remember about mobility when collecting gadgets and toys - during the session, we will walk and move around, so take only the necessary things.
