Keepsake Collection (45 mins) – One Location
Perfect if you want a short but beautiful session focused on one area. Ideal for spots like:
✔ The Vennel & Grassmarket (Castle views & historic streets)
✔ Victoria Street & Upper Bow (Bright colors & classic Edinburgh charm)

Story Collection (1,5 hour) – one location, few backgrounds
This gives us time to explore different backgrounds! We can start at one place and walk to another for variety. Example routes:

A Walking Route to Capture Edinburgh’s Magic
1. NEW COLLEGE, UNIVERSITY OF EDINBURGH
Why I Love It:
There’s something about New College that makes it feel straight out of a fairytale. Its Gothic towers, dramatic staircases, and historic stonework create a stunning backdrop. There is no place more iconic than Edinburgh Castle, and I never get tired of photographing it. It’s more than just a landmark—it’s a symbol of Scotland’s history and strength. Whether we take photos on the Castle Esplanade or use the panoramic views from below, it always creates a powerful and unforgettable shot.
📷 Why it’s great for photos:
It offers breathtaking, grand images—perfect for travelers who want a classic Edinburgh memory.

3. The Writers’ Museum & Makars’ Court
Lawnmarket, Lady Stair’s Close, Edinburgh, EH1 2PA
Why I Love It:
Tucked away in a quiet courtyard off the Royal Mile, The Writers’ Museum and Makars’ Court feel like a hidden piece of history in the heart of Edinburgh. The beautiful sandstone building, the old spiral staircase, and the cobbled square create a peaceful, storybook-like setting that feels almost untouched by time. I love how intimate and quiet it is—a perfect escape from the busy Royal Mile.

4. The Vennel & Flodden Wall
Why I Love It:
If you want a picture-perfect view of Edinburgh Castle, this is where you need to be. The Vennel’s stone steps naturally lead the eye toward the castle, and it feels like a hidden discovery every time. I love the contrast of the historic Flodden Wall, which adds a rugged, medieval feel to the background.
📷 Why it’s great for photos:
The best castle-framed shot in the city. Plus, early in the morning, it’s quiet and perfect for dreamy, cinematic portraits.
🔍 INTERESTING FACT:
The Vennel: The term “vennel” refers to a passageway between buildings, commonly found in Scotland and the northeast of England.

5. Grassmarket
Why I Love It:
I love the energy of Grassmarket—it is full of history, color, and life. The lively atmosphere, vibrant shopfronts, and stunning views of Edinburgh Castle make it a wonderful place to capture the city’s charm. The beautiful historic buildings surrounding the area add depth and character to every shot. On Saturdays, the Grassmarket transforms into a bustling market from 10 am to 5 pm, offering a variety of art, crafts, jewelry, gifts, and delicious locally made food. This market adds a unique vibrancy to the area, making it an ideal spot to immerse in the local culture and capture candid, lively photographs.
📷 Why it’s great for photos:

6. Victoria Street & Victoria Terrace
Victoria Street, Edinburgh, EH1 2HG
Why I Love It:
Victoria Street is one of the most photogenic streets in Edinburgh—with its colorful facades, curved road, and historic charm, it looks like something straight out of a storybook. The way the street winds gently downhill gives a beautiful natural perspective, leading the eye perfectly through the scene.
📷 Why it’s great for photos:
The vibrant colors and the winding street create a fun, dynamic backdrop that looks stunning in every season. Because this is a popular tourist area, I always recommend shooting early in the morning when it is quieter and more atmospheric.

🔍 Interesting Fact:
It is widely believed that Victoria Street was the inspiration for Diagon Alley in Harry Potter. J.K. Rowling wrote much of the series in Edinburgh, and this street—with its quirky shops, bright facades, and hidden staircases—feels exactly like something from the wizarding world. Potter fans will love spotting details that resemble the magical shopping street from the books.

Turn the other way, and you have Grassmarket in the background, with its historic buildings and lively atmosphere.
Candlemaker Row is equally special, with its colorful facades, beautiful stonework, and winding road leading up to the famous Greyfriars Bobby statue. The combination of old-world charm and vibrant colors makes this a fantastic location for capturing playful, dynamic, and timeless moments.

8. Greyfriars Bobby Statue
30-34 Candlemaker Row, Edinburgh, EH1 2QE
Why I Love It:
The Greyfriars Bobby Statue stands as a heartwarming tribute to loyalty and affection. This charming bronze sculpture of the Skye Terrier, who faithfully guarded his master’s grave for 14 years, encapsulates the deep bond between humans and their canine companions. I love this spot because it not only tells a touching story but also adds a quaint and endearing element to the city’s historic landscape.
📷Why it’s Great for Photos:
The statue’s location at the junction of Candlemaker Row and George IV Bridge offers a picturesque setting, with the backdrop of Edinburgh’s historic architecture

9. Greyfriars Kirkyard
26A Candlemaker Row, Edinburgh, EH1 2QQ
Why I Love It:
Greyfriars Kirkyard is not for everyone, and I completely understand that. Visiting a graveyard might not be at the top of your list, but if you love atmospheric, moody locations with incredible views of Edinburgh’s layered skyline, this spot has something truly special.
The old stone walls, historic tombs, and towering trees create a peaceful, almost cinematic setting. Early in the morning or on misty days, it feels like stepping into another time. And the view? The way the rooftops stack up in layers over the city is absolutely stunning.
📷Why it’s great for photos:
What makes this place stand out is the way the rooftops stack up behind the kirkyard, creating one of the best hidden views of Edinburgh. The mix of history, light, and architecture makes it an unforgettable backdrop, especially if you love photos with a little mystery and mood.

10. The Royal Mile
The Royal Mile, Edinburgh, EH1
Why I Love It:
The Royal Mile is Edinburgh’s most famous street, stretching all the way from Edinburgh Castle to Holyrood Palace. There is always something happening here—street performers, music, and a lively atmosphere make it feel full of energy.
📷Why It’s Great for Photos:
The Royal Mile is iconic and instantly recognizable, making it perfect for capturing the essence of Edinburgh. With its old stone buildings, historic details, and bustling street life, it is great for storytelling photos that show the real spirit of the city. Mornings are the best time for quieter moments before the crowds arrive.

🔍 Interesting Fact:
Despite its name, the Royal Mile is actually longer than a mile—it measures 1.12 miles (1.81 km), following an old Scottish unit of measurement known as a Scottish mile.
11. St Giles’ Cathedral
Why I Love It:
Right in the middle of the Royal Mile, St Giles’ Cathedral is one of the most breathtaking landmarks in Edinburgh. Its huge arched windows, detailed stone carvings, and dramatic crown spire make it a stunning backdrop for photos. I especially love the grand doors—they have such a rich, historic feel, perfect for portraits with an elegant touch.

12. Anchor Close & Other Hidden Streets
Why I Love It:
Hidden away just off the Royal Mile, Anchor Close is a classic example of Edinburgh’s secret passageways. Walking through these narrow streets feels like discovering a different side of the city, full of old stone walls, tiny doorways, and the echoes of the past.
📷 Why It’s Great for Photos:
Closes like this offer an intimate, almost cinematic setting, with their narrow walkways, soft light, and textured stone walls. Each one has its own unique character, making them great for mysterious, moody portraits or playful, explorative shots.

There are over 80 different closes along the Royal Mile, many leading to hidden courtyards, gardens, and unexpected viewpoints. Some, like Mary King’s Close, even have underground sections with eerie legends.

13. Cockburn Street
Why I Love It:
Cockburn Street is one of the most charming and photogenic streets in Edinburgh. It winds its way down from the Royal Mile to Waverley Station, curving beautifully with a mix of colorful shopfronts, stone buildings, and cozy cafés. Whether you want a classic Edinburgh street scene or a quiet corner tucked away from the crowds, this street is full of hidden gems.
🔍 Interesting Fact:
Cockburn Street was designed in the 1850s to create a new, easier route between the Royal Mile and the train station. Before that, the area was a maze of tiny, steep closes—some of which can still be found hidden along the street.

15. Chessel’s Court
Chessels Court, Edinburgh EH8 8AD
Why I Love It:
Hidden just off the bustling Royal Mile, Chessel’s Court is a little oasis of peace and charm. The beautiful rustic-colored buildings, the classic Edinburgh stonework, and the quiet courtyard setting make it feel like stepping into a secret corner of the city. One of my favorite details here is the heart-shaped stone on the ground, a unique touch that adds even more character to this already charming spot.
📷 Why It’s Great for Photos:
The contrast between the busy, lively Royal Mile and the calm, almost storybook-like atmosphere of Chessel’s Court makes it a perfect hidden gem for photos. The soft colors, textures, and peaceful surroundings create a romantic, timeless feel that works beautifully for portraits.
🔍 A THOUGHTFUL REMINDER:
This is a residential area, so I always try to keep things quiet and respectful when taking photos.

16. Bakehouse Close
146 Canongate, Royal Mile, Edinburgh, EH8 8DD
Why I Love It:
Tucked away off the Royal Mile, Bakehouse Close feels like stepping straight into the past. Its cobbled alleyway, weathered stone walls, and historic tenement buildings make it one of the best-preserved closes in Edinburgh.
📷 Why It’s Great for Photos:
The textured stone, rustic doors, and hidden courtyard make this spot a dreamy, cinematic backdrop. It is quiet and full of character, ideal for capturing authentic, intimate moments without the usual crowds of the Royal Mile.
🔍 Interesting Fact:
If you are an Outlander fan, this spot might look familiar. Bakehouse Close was used as a filming location in Season 3—it was transformed into Carfax Close, where Jamie Fraser ran his print shop in 18th-century Edinburgh. This connection has made it a must-visit location for Outlander fans.

17. Dunbar’s Close Garden
137 Canongate, Royal Mile, Edinburgh, EH8 8BW
Why I Love It:
Tucked away just off the Royal Mile, Dunbar’s Close Garden feels like a hidden escape in the middle of the city. It is a peaceful, secret garden, full of greenery, stone pathways, and benches where you can slow down and take in the moment. What makes it even more special is that most people walk right past it without even realizing it is there.
🔍 Interesting Fact:
The garden is designed in a 17th-century style, so stepping inside feels like traveling back in time. It was once part of a private residence, but today, it is open to everyone—a hidden retreat right in the heart of Edinburgh’s busy Old Town.

18. White Horse Close
10, White Horse Close, Edinburgh EH8 8BU
Why I Love It:
This is one of my absolute favorite hidden spots in Edinburgh. White Horse Close looks like a place straight out of a storybook, with its charming old buildings, ivy-covered walls, and peaceful atmosphere. It sits just off the Royal Mile but feels like a quiet little world of its own, far removed from the city’s bustle.
📷 Why It’s Great for Photos:
The rustic architecture, soft colors, and greenery make this close feel like a perfect hidden courtyard. It is a quiet, intimate space, ideal for capturing beautiful portraits with a historic and cozy feel.

Abbey Strand, Edinburgh EH8 8DU
Why I Love It:
Right at the end of the Royal Mile, just before you reach Holyrood Palace, sits the Abbey Strand Centre—a beautifully restored historic building with a rich past. Its intricate stonework, grand windows, and warm-colored facade make it a gorgeous backdrop for photos, especially in the soft morning light. This area is a perfect starting or finishing point for exploring the lower part of the Royal Mile, where history, architecture, and nature blend seamlessly.
📷 Why It’s Great for Photos:
With Holyrood Palace, the Scottish Parliament, and Arthur’s Seat just steps away, this area offers a mix of elegance and open space. The textures of the old stone, the charm of the historic facade, and the peaceful atmosphere make it an ideal spot for portraits or candid moments.

Helpful Tips for Your Edinburgh Photoshoot
Planning a photoshoot while traveling should be fun and stress-free! Here are a few helpful tips to make sure you get the most out of your session and enjoy the experience to the fullest.

Best Time for Photos
If you want the best light and fewer crowds, the early morning is perfect. Edinburgh is a busy city, and by late morning, many of its most famous spots fill up with visitors. A sunrise session gives us the chance to capture the city at its most peaceful, with soft, flattering light and quieter streets.
Golden hour (just before sunset) can also be beautiful, but keep in mind that Old Town’s narrow streets and tall buildings mean we don’t always get that golden glow in the same way you might in other locations. That’s why I always recommend mornings for the best photos.

What If It Rains?
Edinburgh’s weather is unpredictable—that’s part of its charm. A little mist or drizzle can actually make for incredibly magical photos, adding an atmospheric, cinematic feel to your images.
🌦️ If there is only light rain or mist, we can embrace it. Umbrellas make a lovely addition to photos, and a few raindrops can make Edinburgh’s streets shine beautifully.
🌧️If the forecast predicts heavy rain or strong winds, I always keep an eye on it and will be in touch to adjust the timing or consider alternative locations, such as covered spots or cozy indoor cafés.

WHAT TO WEAR FOR YOUR EDINBURGH PHOTOSHOOT
Dressing for an Edinburgh session is all about comfort, timeless style, and a little personality.
- Comfortable shoes are a must. The city is full of cobbled streets, uneven pathways, and hidden closes, so make sure your footwear is both stylish and practical. Heels or very thin-soled shoes can be tricky on the stone streets.
- Choose coordinating outfits rather than matching ones. Neutral, earthy, and muted tones work beautifully against Edinburgh’s historic stonework and natural backdrops. Think beige, camel, soft blues, greens, or deep burgundy.
- Layers always work well. The weather can shift throughout the day, so adding a stylish coat, a knit sweater, or a soft scarf gives flexibility and adds lovely texture to photos.
- Want a touch of Scotland? If you’ve picked up a Scottish tartan scarf, hat, or other souvenir, incorporating it into your session is a fun way to add a local touch while staying cozy.
- Avoid large logos or busy patterns. These can distract from the overall look of your photos. Simple, classic styles always photograph best.
💡 PRO TIP: IF YOU ARE TRAVELING WITH KIDS, CONSIDER BRINGING AN EXTRA WARM LAYER FOR THEM AND A SMALL SNACK OR TREAT TO KEEP THE SESSION FUN AND RELAXED.
