Why you should get

winter family photos.

Tips to make your winter photography session the best!

When you have a photoshoot in winter, timing is key. If you book an outdoor family session in January and February, I will make sure we pick a day with beautiful light. For this reason, I keep lots of flexibility in my calendar to ensure we have the best conditions for the magic to happen. I usually do these photoshoots first thing in the morning or 2 hours before sunset. This is the warmest time of day.

5 TIPS FOR GREAT FAMILY PHOTOS OUTSIDE IN COLD WEATHER

Here are my top five tips for preparing your family for a successful (fun, stress-free and happy) photoshoot with me this season.

DRESSING FOR YOUR WINTER FAMILY PORTRAITS

Make sure to layer up and play up the winter clothing options – chunky scarves, fur-lined boots, hats and gloves all help create variety in our images. Do wear a couple of layers underneath, though, to make sure you stay warm, particularly so for the kids; even consider thermals and doubling up on socks. Once we get moving and the kids are running around, we can always strip layers off, again creating more variety for your family photo album.

GLOVES, HATS AND SCARFS

It gets chilly outside and little fingers get cold quickly. Even my hands are getting cold, and I have difficulty pressing buttons on the camera. So remember, gloves are a must. A warm, fluffy hat and scarf will keep you warm and look great in photos

Blankets

Take a warm blanket with you to wrap yourself in. If you bring a cute blanket, we can use it in pictures (you can hug it together). Even if we don't use it in photos, bring a blanket to keep you warm during the session. This is especially useful when I am concentrating on photographing one child - other children (or parents) may use the blanket.

I always have a warm blanket with me ;)

Hot chocolate

Who doesn't love hot cocoa? Nothing warms your hands like a delicious drink. Like blankets, warm drinks (in mugs or thermos flasks) can be used as cute props and functional hand warmers.

If your session is in an urban location, we can always stop at a coffee shop for something warm to drink. If we are somewhere in the forest, remember to pack something warm in a thermos.

Be Prepared to Play at your Outdoor Winter Family Photos

It is getting colder, so I will do my very best to keep you all warm ;)

If we are lucky and have a great snowy scene, come prepared to play. I think kids in winter coats and gloves make for some adorable photos! We can throw snow, make snow angels, have snowball fights, etc.

If there is no snow to play with, I always have a big game list up my sleeve ;)

BONUS TIP !!!

Tissues

Snotty runny noses. Need I say more?

In winter, I make sure that I work super fast and more efficiently, so if we have to end the session 20 minutes earlier because the kids are already cold, we can. I get to work right away, taking the most important photos first, so I'm ready to end the photoshoot at any moment before you get too cold.

WINTER PHOTOSHOOT AT HOME

At-Home Lifestyle Session

Lifestyle family photos at home are beyond special. Not only does this make each session especially unique and personalized to each family, but there is nothing quite as comforting as having a photo session in the comforts of your own home. Kids already feel at ease, safe and relaxed in their own space, so this is a particularly great option for families with young children. Baby milestone sessions and newborn sessions are also ideally photographed at home.
