Old Town Photo Walk for Couples & Families
This is a curated example of how an Old Town photo walk can look. Each walk is slightly different. The starting point depends on your plans, your accommodation, and what you would most like to see. Some couples prefer to begin at the top of the Royal Mile, others at the Grassmarket or closer to their hotel. Before the walk, I share a simple plan and a Google Maps meeting point, but we always stay flexible. The route can adjust naturally depending on the light, the weather, and how the city feels that day.
Meeting Point
When we explore the lower part of Old Town, especially near the Castle, I often suggest meeting in the Grassmarket. It is easy to find, full of character, and gives us space to begin without feeling rushed.
We usually spend a few minutes simply talking. I welcome you, we chat about your day so far, how your trip has been, and what you are hoping for from the walk. I never start taking photos immediately. That would feel uncomfortable for most people. The first few minutes are about settling in and feeling relaxed.
Vennel
From the Grassmarket, we walk together toward the Vennel. It is a short uphill path that opens to one of the most beautiful views of Edinburgh Castle. We pause there, enjoy the view, and this is usually where the first natural photos begin to happen — nothing forced, just walking, talking, and taking in the surroundings.
Grassmarket
After those first relaxed minutes together, we begin walking through the Grassmarket itself. This area has a very different feeling from the Royal Mile. It is open, colourful, and framed by the Castle above. The buildings create a beautiful backdrop, and there is space to move naturally.
We do not rush. Sometimes we walk slowly along the street, sometimes we pause near the arches or along the stone walls. These are usually very natural moments — walking side by side, laughing, adjusting a scarf in the wind, simply being there.
Victoria Street and Victoria Terrace
From the Grassmarket, we gently move uphill toward Victoria Street. This is one of the most recognisable streets in Edinburgh, known for its curved shape and colourful shopfronts. It can be busy, so timing matters here. If the street feels lively, we move with it. If it is quieter, we take advantage of the space.
Above Victoria Street is Victoria Terrace, which gives us a slightly higher perspective and beautiful stone textures. From there, we often get lovely views across the rooftops and toward the Old Town skyline. The combination of narrow streets below and open views above creates variety in the walk without it ever feeling staged.
The Royal Mile
From Victoria Terrace, we usually make our way toward the Royal Mile. This is the main street running through Edinburgh’s Old Town, connecting the Castle at the top with the Holyrood Palace at the bottom.
It can be busy, but that is part of its energy. The buildings here feel old and full of character, and the atmosphere changes depending on the time of day.
Sometimes we simply walk and talk. Sometimes we pause when the light looks good between the buildings. Nothing is rushed, and nothing feels staged.
Makars’ Court
Just off the Royal Mile, I often guide couples & families into Makars’ Court. It is a quiet courtyard hidden away from the main street. The ground is patterned with stone quotes, and the space feels calm compared to the outside noise.
This is usually where everything slows down again. It feels more private, more relaxed. The city is still around us, but it feels softer here.
Near St Giles’ Cathedral
We often finish near St Giles’ Cathedral. The architecture here is beautiful, and the open space gives us room to breathe after the narrow streets.
By this point, most couples feel completely at ease. The first few minutes of nervousness are long gone. The walk feels natural. We take a few final moments here, depending on the light and how the city feels that day, and then the experience gently comes to an end.
A Coffee Break Along the Way
Some couples and families like to pause for a short break during the walk. Sometimes it is a quick coffee. Sometimes an ice cream. Occasionally even a small whisky stop if that feels right for the moment.
Old Town has plenty of small cafés and cosy spots, so it is easy to step inside for a few minutes and warm up or rest. These breaks are never a problem. They are part of the experience.
Often, those relaxed moments — sitting by a window, holding warm cups, laughing about the wind outside, become some of the most natural photos of the day.
The walk does not need to feel structured from start to finish. If you want a pause, we take one. If you prefer to keep moving, we do that instead.
Edinburgh as Part of Your Story
As we walk, I also capture parts of Edinburgh itself. The skyline. The rooftops. The Castle in the distance. The way the streets open up as we turn a corner.
These moments become part of your gallery too. Not just photos of you, but photos of the city you experienced together.
When you look back at your gallery years from now, you will not only remember how you looked. You will remember where you were. The views. The streets. The feeling of walking through Old Town.
Edinburgh becomes part of your memory.
Your Old Town Walk
No two walks are ever the same, but this example shows how relaxed and natural the experience can feel. If you would like to explore Old Town this way during your visit, just let me know and we can look at dates and timing together.
