Where to Propose in Edinburgh (and How to Plan It)
For anyone planning a proposal while visiting Edinburgh
Edinburgh is one of those places that already feels special before anything even happens. The views, the streets, the hills, everything around you adds to the moment without trying too hard.
If you are thinking about proposing here, it does not need to be complicated. A simple plan, the right place, and the right timing can make it feel natural and unforgettable.
I have been part of a few proposals here, and I wanted to share a few simple things that really help.
Best places to propose in Edinburgh
You do not need a perfect place. You need a place that feels right for you.
Edinburgh gives you so many options, and each one feels a little different. Some places are open with big views, some are quiet and tucked away, and some have that classic city feeling people travel here for.
When you are choosing where to propose in Edinburgh, it helps to think about what kind of moment you want. Something private and calm, or something with a bit more energy around you. Something in nature, or something in the heart of the Old Town.
Here are a few locations that work really well for proposals and photography:
Arthur’s Seat
One of the most popular places for a proposal in Edinburgh, and for a good reason. You get open space, beautiful views over the city, and a feeling of being away from everything. It works especially well for early morning proposals and for couples who enjoy a short walk.
Calton Hill
Easy to reach and still gives you some of the best views in Edinburgh. This is a great option if you want something simple, with a strong city backdrop, without too much walking.
Circus Lane, Stockbridge
A quieter, more intimate location. Very pretty, very calm, and perfect if you prefer something more relaxed and less exposed than the main viewpoints.
Old Town (Victoria Street, small streets nearby)
If you are visiting Edinburgh and want that classic look, this is it. Colourful buildings, historic streets, and a lively atmosphere. It works well if you like a bit more energy around your moment.
The Vennel
One of my favourite city spots. A slightly hidden spot with a beautiful view of the castle. It feels more private than you would expect, even though it is very close to the busy areas. A really nice balance between city and quiet.
Best time of day
Morning. If you can, choose the morning.
Early morning or sunrise is usually the best choice.
The city is quiet, you have space around you, and the moment feels more private. There is no audience, no rush, no distractions. It can just be the two of you.
It is also easier on you. You are not thinking about the ring all day or waiting for the “right moment.”
Sunset can also be beautiful and very romantic. The light is warm, the atmosphere feels special, and it can be very romantic.
The only thing to keep in mind is that places like Arthur’s Seat or Calton Hill can be busy at that time, especially in good weather. In summer, sunset also comes quite late, and it is never fully guaranteed.
How I help you plan it

You tell me your idea, even if it is not fully planned yet.

I can help you decide which spot will work best depending on the kind of moment you want, how private you would like it to feel, and how much walking you are happy to do.
3. We decide on the time
I will always help with this too. In most cases, early morning works best.
4. We talk through the plan
You can ask me anything. Sometimes a quick Zoom call or WhatsApp call is the easiest way to go through everything and make it all feel clear.
5. We keep the plan simple
Once we choose the location, I will usually send you the exact pin so we both know where the moment is meant to happen.
6. You share a photo with me
This really helps, especially in busier places. I know exactly who I am looking for.
7. Live location helps a lot
On the day, sharing your live location with me on WhatsApp is often the easiest option. It helps me follow where you are and be ready at the right moment without too much messaging.
8. We stay flexible and in touch
The weather, the light, or the number of people around can change, so it always helps to keep things simple and stay open.
Usually, proposals happen in one of two ways:
➡️ She knows about the photoshoot (less surprise, but more relaxed)
➡️ She does not know anything (this is how most proposals happen)
Both can work beautifully. It just depends on what feels right for you.
A small note about the weather
Edinburgh weather changes quickly, so it is good to be prepared for anything. That is just part of being in Scotland.
But honestly, it often adds something to the moment.
A bit of wind, moving clouds, a light drizzle, even cooler air — it makes everything feel more real, less staged, more like your actual memory of the day.
We can always adjust slightly if needed. Change the timing, pause for a few minutes, or move a little. There is always a way.
The most important thing is your energy. If you stay relaxed and open, the moment will feel right, whatever the weather does.
