Big Memories, Little Story: A cold morning, a long walk, and one very special memory
Kelvin came to Edinburgh all the way from Singapore. He had one simple wish for his trip — to see the sunrise from Arthur’s Seat.
We chose a date for the session, and I will admit I had a small worry in the back of my mind. In Scotland, the weather is never guaranteed, and I really hoped the city would show its best side for him.
Two days before our session, I started checking the forecast. It looked promising. Sunrise was just before eight, so we agreed to meet at seven, giving ourselves plenty of time to walk up together.
When I arrived at the car park, it was still dark and very cold — just around one degree. We wrapped up, grabbed a torch, and started our walk up. It was quiet, still, and peaceful.
Because it was dark, we used the torch to watch our steps. We talked about life, travel, and all sorts of small things. It always amazes me how easily conversations can flow with someone you have just met. This is one of the things I love most about what I do.
We reached the first viewpoint while the sky was still full of stars. It was beautiful already. We took a few photos and continued walking. At the top, there were a few other early risers, but we found a calm spot just below the peak, away from the wind. I made a warm cup of tea from my flask, and we waited.

When the sun finally started to rise, I noticed the look on Kelvin’s face. There was this quiet excitement, a real moment of joy. It was exactly what he had hoped for. Even now, thinking about it gives me chills.
We stayed there for a while, taking photos and simply watching the light change around us. It felt calm, unhurried, and very real.
After walking back down, we realised we still had some energy, so we continued to the Royal Mile for a few more photos. It felt like a gentle way to finish the morning and see a different side of the city waking up.
Some sessions stay with you for a long time. This was one of them. This was one of them. A beautiful walk, a breathtaking sunrise, and a moment that felt truly special to witness and photograph.
