Rainy Day Photoshoots in Scotland

Little rain, lots of fun

Rain☔ in Edinburgh has its special charm. The cobbled streets, historic buildings, and parks come alive in a new way when it drizzles. So, no need to worry if your photoshoot falls on a rainy day! A little rain can add a magical touch to your pictures that sunny skies just can’t.

That soft, overcast light acts like a natural filter, making colours pop and giving your skin a beautiful glow. And who knows? After the rain, you might get lucky with a stunning rainbow🌈—What could be a more beautiful background for your photoshoot than a beautiful glowy rainbow?

One of the best things that rain can bring is that the city is often quieter, giving us more privacy for those sweet, intimate moments. Plus, puddles create fun reflections that make your photos even more unique.

So don’t be afraid of the rain! Whether it's bright rain boots, a chance for a rainbow, or simply cosy moments together, a little drizzle can turn your Edinburgh photoshoot into something truly special. ☔📸🌈

Why rainy day photoshoots are amazing

Believe it or not, rain adds a unique magic to photos that clear skies often can’t. Here’s why:

  • Soft, Even Light: On rainy days, the clouds act as a natural diffuser, creating soft, even lighting that is perfect for flattering portraits.
  •  Dramatic Atmosphere: Wet streets reflect light and create a dramatic mood, making the entire scene look like it’s out of a storybook.
  • Gorgeous Colors: Rain can enhance the natural colors around us, making greenery more lush and cityscapes more vibrant. Your photos will have a richness to them that’s truly one-of-a-kind.
  •  Unique Moments: Let’s face it – not everyone gets rainy-day photos! The misty air, raindrops, and cosy umbrellas will make your shoot feel like an adventure, and you’ll have stunning, out-of-the-ordinary photos to treasure.

What to bring for your rainy day photoshoot

1. Umbrellas

Umbrellas (the prettier, the better!) are not only practical but also wonderful photo props. Consider bringing a colourful, clear/seethrough, or patterned umbrella to add character to your shots. Plus, they’ll keep you dry while we work to create your memories.

 2. Waterproof Jackets or Ponchos

A stylish waterproof jacket can keep you comfortable while adding a bit of flair to your photos. And don’t worry, we’ll take shots where the jacket can come off if you’d like – so your outfit can still shine through!

 3. Comfortable Shoes

Rain means slippery streets, so it’s always a good idea to wear shoes with good grip. Whether it’s boots or sneakers, comfort is key.

 4. Hair and Makeup Essentials

Rain can be unpredictable, so pack a small kit with a brush and maybe a compact mirror. A quick touch-up between shots is sometimes all it takes to keep you looking your best.

5. A Positive Attitude!

Rainy day photoshoots may feel unexpected, but they are often the most memorable! Bring along a smile, and trust that we’ll create beautiful moments, no matter the weather.

Planning a rainy day photoshoot with kids

If you’re bringing your little ones for a rainy day shoot, there are a few extra things to think about to keep them happy and comfortable:

 1. Pack Extra Clothes: If they get a bit wet, a spare set of clothes can keep everyone smiling and dry.

 2. Fun Rain Gear: Kids love to play in puddles, so why not lean into it? Bright rain boots, fun raincoats, and cute umbrellas can make for adorable and playful photos.

 3. Snacks and Warm Drinks: A little treat or warm drink can help keep kids cosy and in good spirits during the shoot.

 4. Keep it Playful: Let them explore! Rainy day photoshoots with kids can be full of giggles, puddle jumps, and spontaneous fun. The best photos often come when kids are being themselves and enjoying the moment. Embrace the Rain!

Rainy days in Edinburgh may be a part of life, but they’re also a chance to create something truly special. Whether you’re wandering through the historic streets, twirling under an umbrella, or letting your kids splash in puddles, these are moments to cherish. So, don’t let the rain keep you from your photoshoot – let’s make magic in the mist!

What happens if the weather is bad?

IF POSSIBLE, LET'S WAIT UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE.

If you've scheduled an outdoor photoshoot with me and it is rainy, let's try to wait until the last minute to decide how we'll proceed.

I will monitor the weather forecast before our shoot. If it looks horrible, I will contact you on the morning of your session day to discuss other options. These may include changing the time of the shoot or rescheduling for another day.

Please have your cell phone turned on and around you as the time of your photoshoot approaches.

Edinburgh weather often clears out quickly, and stormy skies or even light rain and mist can be AMAZING for photos.

I believe that there is no such thing as bad weather. Every type of weather offers unique opportunities to capture stunning photos. Whether it's a rainy or cloudy day, we can work with the weather conditions to create beautiful and memorable pictures of your family. Sometimes, the most dramatic and exciting photos I take on days when the weather is not perfect. So, even if the weather is not what we hoped for, we can still make the most of the situation and create beautiful memories for you and your family.

Be flexible.

Some people go into a photoshoot wanting a very specific result, which really isn’t my style. By embracing the craziness and surprises of real life, we will capture authentic images of you and your love(s), which is part of the reason I hope you are hiring me!

So, if it starts to pour, let’s seek shelter and laugh!

Rescheduling.

If the weather turns severe and safety becomes an issue, I'm always happy to reschedule. If we're already in the middle of a photoshoot and the weather takes a wild turn with no sign of improvement, we can reschedule for the next available day. I understand that many of my clients are visiting from out of town with limited time, so I’ll do my best to accommodate you and find a new time that works!
